Baby Led Weaning

Posted by lauramcintyre

Baby Led Weaning is a new concept for me really, i have heard about it slightly over the last few years but its only been in the last few weeks that i have became interested in it. For those who don’t know it basically involves letting you child feed them selves with different finger foods rather than starting with purees, This site is a good place to look around if anyone is interested in learning more about it.
A lady in my breastfeeding group was using a combination of blw (as its commonly known) and pureed food and i was planning to do the same, with Rebecca we waited
till around 9 months to introduce any sort of finger foods but i honestly don’t think she was ready before them. Eilidh on the other hand LOVES finger foods and will gobble down anything you giver her to eat, i have had to put away all the lovely recipe books i have acquired over the last few years with the purees recipes and just accept that we will be doing blw full time.
Following this way of weaning is much easier for us to be honest, Eilidh just
joins in out meal times . This morning she had porridge (that i fed to her - but its hard work, going to just start giving her dry cheerios from tomorrow) followed by banana , for lunch she and Rebecca shared a sandwich. For dinner Rebecca and i were having Spicy Bean Burgers and “Chips” (Basically potato’s and other veg’s roasted in the over) , Eilidh
joined in with a little bit of burger and bun and a nice handful of veg - i think she eat more than Rebecca.
I need to make sure the food are gum - able as she is still toothless and she needs to be able to get hold of it , although she is perfecting the pincer grip already and can pick up the smallest crumb.

Im still in shock about how the transition to solids have gone, i have some major guilt issues with starting before 6 months (she is 6 months on Tuesday and started solids 2 weeks ago today). I had a horrible nightmare where she got every illness possible when she was older and the doctor found the cause was starting solids before 6 months - but i know in my heart she was ready, i don’t think if would of been this easy if she wast.

Solids this time around is going to be a wonderful journey, i can tell :)

  1. christinator Said,

Very interesting. I guess in a way we did “baby led weaning” with Nadia, although I didn’t know to call it that. But we started finger foods pretty early, as she just *loved* them. Of course every kid is different, but she was entirely on table foods by 10 months.

  2. Kimberly Said,

Yeah, us too. Bryce ate “baby food” for a while, but after he got his first taste of “real” food, it was all over. I think (for myself at least) that we listen way too much to what the medical community says we “should” do when Mommy and Baby instincts lead us in a different direction. :)
